  5.     With the economy in collapse and unification less than two
  6. months away, East Germany's government last week began a slide
  7. to oblivion. Prime Minister Lothar de Maiziere dismissed two
  8. leading Cabinet ministers and accepted the resignation of two
  9. others, throwing into disarray the broad coalition that has
  10. ruled the country since its first democratic elections last
  11. spring.

  13.     De Maiziere's ousting of his Finance Minister Walter Romberg
  14. and Agriculture Minister Peter Pollack, both backed by the
  15. rival Social Democrats, was an attempt to shift blame for East
  16. Germany's enormous economic woes onto the SPD. But those
  17. firings, along with the departures of the Justice and Economics
  18. ministers, also reflected the increasing irrelevance of the
  19. East German government. "Leading officials are resigning to try
  20. for positions at the local and regional levels," says a senior
  21. East Berlin official. "They don't want jobs that are about to
  22. disappear. Soon there will be no government at all."
